Abstract

This article attempts to answer the question "Is religious freedom incompatible with gender justice in a multi-ethinic society?" by examining the processes of legal reform in India. The paper looks, in deatil, at contemporary debates about the role of the state in religion from the perspective of ensuring inalienable rights for women.
