Abstract

In the century in which the printed book passed from infancy to maturity, of the 100 women writers whose names we know, 35 only published texts, fewer still with any measure of success. Three periods can be discerned, corresponding to the material and ideological condi· lions obtaining. From 1497 to 1522, printed versions of traditionally popular books, largely descriptive of the feminine ideal, such as those of Christine de Pizan, were in demand. In the second period, 1531-1562, exceptional women were published as proof of the primacy of French culture. The last period, 1562-1626, presents a varied face, featuring women writers involved in the controversies of the time, in devotional writing and as discrete mirrors of their male associates. It was also at this time that the first women to conceive of themselves self-consciously as writers, Catherine and Madeleine Des Roches, published their writings.
