First Blood: How Three Generations of Newfoundland Women Learned about Menstruation

Abstract

This article discusses how girls in Newfoundland learn about and experience menstruation. The project focussed on three generations of women, and we found differences, over time, in how appropriate knowledge is acquired by young girls and how the event of menarche is experienced and interpreted. Résumé Cet article discute de la façon dont les filles de Terre-Neuve sont renseignées et éprouvent la menstruation. Le projet s'est concentré sur trois générations de femmes, et nous avons trouvé des différences, au fil du temps, sur façon dont la connaissance appropriée est acquise par les jeunes femmes et comment la venue des menstruations est éprouvée et interprétée.
