Abstract

This review essay addresses the interplay of art and obstetrics revealed i n fictional selections which are part of the author's own literary experience. Juxtaposition of fictional scenes and medical developments of the same period highlights their mutual reinforcement and suggests a need to transcend limits imposed on each by the culture enveloping both.
